Here’s a look at three items from Tuesday, Nov. 3: Election Day trading on Wall Street, U.S. defensive strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, and Fredericksburg’s new logo for its 300th anniversary in 2028.

The Economy

U.S. stocks finished mixed on Election Day. The S&P 500 rose 0.36% to 7,568.92, snapping a three-day losing streak, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.83% to 25,372.01, according to CNBC. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 197.26 points, or 0.38%, to 51,786.72. Yahoo Finance reported the same closing levels.

Apple shares fell nearly 2% after the company issued a margin forecast that disappointed investors and iPad sales for the fiscal fourth quarter missed estimates, CNBC reported. Chipmakers rebounded: Advanced Micro Devices gained more than 3%, Broadcom rose about 3%, and Micron Technology and Nvidia each added more than 2%.

Oil prices settled lower. Brent crude fell 1.12% to $103.60 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate fell 0.38% to $96.09, CNBC said, as investors also watched midterm election results.

World

The United States conducted what a U.S. official described as defensive strikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz on the eve of the midterm elections, the Associated Press reported via PBS News. Iranian state television reported explosions on Qeshm Island. The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly, said the strikes targeted “Iranians using surface to air missiles against U.S. assets.”

The AP said the strikes appeared limited rather than a return to full hostilities. Al Jazeera, citing U.S. media including Fox News, reported that some officials framed the action as a response to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps firing at a U.S. aircraft. Asked earlier whether he was considering striking Iran after the midterms, President Donald Trump replied “no,” Al Jazeera reported. Before the strikes were widely confirmed, Vice President JD Vance told reporters the administration felt “pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement.”

Around Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg has unveiled its logo for the city’s 300th anniversary in 2028, marking its founding in 1728. According to Potomac Local, Mayor Kerry P. Devine and Beth Black, chair of the Fredericksburg 300th Anniversary Blue Ribbon Steering Committee, presented the logo at the regular City Council meeting on Oct. 27. Fredericksburg VA Patch also covered the reveal, describing a gold-and-blue “300.”

Arts Commission member Pete Morelewicz designed the mark after the committee met with the Arts Commission in April 2026, Potomac Local reported. Officials said the logo is meant for jerseys, mugs, T-shirts, race bibs, signs, flags and other merchandise, with items expected soon at the Visitor Center. The Blue Ribbon Steering Committee, appointed in fall 2025, has held more than 80 planning and community meetings as fundraising and programming for a year of 2028 events continue.
